Without words

Having been sent to Prairie out of a difficult home situation in grade 9, I found everything about the school positive. One memory that stuck with me was seeing Mr. Maxwell walking down the sidewalk and Miriam coming the other way. No words, just a huge beaming smile. Something I had never experienced, which I considered a great model.

Another conversation, this time with a mission leader who was answering Maxwell's question about the biggest problem with missionaries. The response, "imaginary unfulfilled potential".

Drinking wine

OK, let's toss in a few more memories: (don't know why some of these stick) speaking of a conversation with Mr. Howard, editor of the Sunday School Times, they were commenting an article that had been published purporting to show that wine in the Bible was not alcoholic, but rather a thick syrup that could be transported without spoiling. Mr. Howard's conclusion was, "I'm not sure that he can prove that".

Heavenly Father

From Karen Olson: my comment related to the simple fact that Mr. Maxwell taught me that as my Heavenly Father, God LOVES me.....ME!

From John McPherson, One of my favorite L.E. Maxwell quotes is, "The hardest thing in the world is to stay balanced." The corollary to that (my addition) is "The most important thing in life is to stay balanced."

In your mouth

Preaching recently on Romans 10, I recalled how Mr. Maxwell made a text memorable (The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart) by walking down to the front row and sticking his finger in Bert Affleck's open mouth.
He made things stick. I wanted to collect some of those things, from your memories onto this blog. Maybe we still can. Send comments. Maybe there's a better way of doing this. Maybe there's a web person who knows how. I think we can come up with a valuable document.

At 70

Commenting on the fact that he was 70 years old (I think this was in G classroom), he remarked that it seemed like he was just beginning to get to know the Scriptures. What made me think of this was the fact that that thought recently came to me at the age of 70. The Bible is so exciting, and I don't see how there can be enough lifetime left to fully take advantage of it. I certainly am grateful for digital tools like e-sword, which allow us to put more time into the Word and less looking things up. I still have my 2 favorite Bible helps that I bought in high school at Prairie, Strongs Concordance and Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. But now both of these are part of my electronic Bible.
